PRESERVING DEMOCRACY - BACKGROUND INFO

There are so many issues that need attention today, from climate change to homelessness, education to healthcare, LGBTQ rights to racial injustice and more. But none of these issues can be solved if we don’t have free and fair elections, where everyone is supported in having their voice heard and where there is an earnest commitment to the will of the majority of Americans taking precedence over the desires of a small minority of wealthy citizens and corporations.

Sync Music for a Change focussed on voter suppression back in April and we are returning to the theme of democracy this month in support of The For the People Act, a broader bill that protects not only voting rights but prevents rigging the system through redistricting and stops billionaires from buying elections by limiting the outsized influence of big and dark money in politics.

In a statement on July 30th, the President, Vice President, Speaker, and Senate Leader agreed on the moral imperative of passing legislation to protect against voter suppression, electoral subversion, dark money, and partisan gerrymandering, and will continue working together toward that goal urgently. The House has passed the For the People Act, but the Senate has yet to do so. We need to speak out to make sure it happens.

OR

Write to your Senator in support of: S1, The For the People Act

Example letter to cut and paste (please personalize your own reason for supporting the bill):

Hi Senator [Name],

Thank you for the hard work you do every day to represent our state.

I’m writing to ask you to support S1, the For the People Act. This is a once-in-a-generation bill that would clean up our political system, get big money out of politics, hold elected officials accountable for corruption, expand and protect voting rights, and create a democracy that is representative of all Americans’ voices and values.

Without a strong democracy, America’s position in the world is diminished and our ability to make positive change going forward is severely limited. Please support this crucial legislation.

Many thanks,

[Your name]
