The Issue: Helping Refugees (Ukraine, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Yemen)
The late February Russian invasion of Ukraine has shocked the world and drawn intense media attention. Almost every country around the globe has joined in denouncing this needless war and there has been an outpouring of sympathy for Ukrainians and a desire to help those fleeing for their lives. Right now the European Union (EU) estimates that up to four million people may try to leave the country because of the Russian invasion. The situation is truly awful, and they need more than words of solidarity; they need our help.
At the same time there are many other poorer countries where people are suffering similar fates, mostly notably Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Yemen. It has long been the case that the plights of non-white, poor people from the global south are ignored or treated as less important, so let's take this moment, while our attention is focussed on refugees to make sure that these equally deserving people also have our support.
